The Grapes of Wrath 1
The Grapes of Wrath 1, oil on paper, 2001, 29.5" X 41" Story While reading John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize winning The Grapes of Wrath I was impressed by the many visual words used to tell the story. I decided to do a painting based on these visuals. The spiral shape is an element from the abstract paintings I was doing at the time and gave an opportunity to organize 157 pictograms that tell the story of the first six chapters in a sequential manner. The drawing and painting style is purposely naive (or faux naive) to reflect the uneducated characters depicted in the novel. |
