Reflections on Walden Pond, watercolor collage, circa 1985, 29.5" X 41" StoryWhile traveling in Massachusetts, I took a detour to visit Walden Pond. It was a beautiful autumn afternoon and I was attracted to the color of the leaves. I began picking up leaves as I walked. I brought them back to Iowa and rendered them in a random pattern at actual size on a sheet of watercolor paper. My daughter, Jenny, who was 10 at the time, said "All you need now is the wind." After painting in a background with random gradations of blue-gray, Jenny said "Now I see the wind." When a painting for a collage is at this stage, I am sometimes temped to leave it as is rather than cutting it up. (An example is The Dozen Roses. My original concept was to do a fan shape, but decided to leave the pieces much larger.) While I was tempted, I cut the painting into strips and rearranged it on another background for the final composition, Reflections on Walden Pond. |
