The inscribed series developed out of my experimentation with oil paints. From 1971 to 2000, I worked almost entirely on paper with pencil and watercolor and collage. As I began my full-time art career, I believed that I would have to begin working in oil paint to produce significant work that would be taken seriously by galleries and museums in major markets. In the Inscribed series, I began by painting a canvas with very thick, textured oil paint. While this was wet, I inscribed lines relating to my doodles or other imagery that appealed to me. When this was dry, I over painted selective parts to create completed compositions.
