Hard Edge Collage
One of the courses I was teaching at Mount Mercy College (now University) in the late 1970’s was watercolor. I had brought all of my watercolor supplies to campus to do demonstrations for my students. That night, when I realized I wanted to work on a watercolor at my home studio and couldn’t, I reviewed all of my finished watercolors and set aside all of those I wasn’t completely happy with. I began to cut them up and put them together into abstract compositions. I soon realized the potential of this process and began making watercolor sheets of colors and textures specifically to be cut up. I often thought about Paul Klee’s compositions while working on this series. |
