Summer of '68, watercolor collage, circa 1983, approx. 28" X 20"

Story

There are times when a shape, color, or texture jogs a memory and becomes the starting point for a composition that takes on a life of its own. I hesitate to tell some specific stories because it then limits how people think about the compositions. I like people to view my work with their own memories and make interpretations that fit their own experiences. I'll tell this story anyway. In 1983 I was painting watercolor fragments - pieces of color, shape, texture, etc. that were developed only because of their inherent interest, not for specific context. I then cut them up and juxtaposed pieces in finished compositions that created a finished work with a specific feeling. Sometimes I would add pastel lines to provide touches of color and contrast the hard-edged shapes. One of the pieces I created reminded me of a lake at night. This made me think about the summer of the year I graduated from high school -- 1968. I was invited to a party by a lake just off of the interstate. On the way, I remember the headlights of oncoming cars appearing cone-shaped. The stars in the night sky and the mystery of being in nature and not being able to see what is around you have always fascinated me. Summer of '68 is about the feeling of relief that one phase of my life was behind me, the unlimited promise of fun and better things to come, and that time and place in my life.
