Mysteries of the Obelisk, watercolor collage, 1982, approx. 10" X 9"

Story

I began this series of collages in 1977. I was teaching at the time and had brought my painting supplies to the college to do a demonstration. Late at night I felt like working on art, but didn't have my paint and brushes.

I went through drawers of all of the work I had done since 1973. I sorted the pieces into a stack that I was satisfied with as finished pieces and a stack that I wasn't satisfied with. I began cutting up this second stack and putting the pieces from several paintings back together again as a collage. The early pieces in this series are dated '73 -- '77 for this reason. Recognizing the potential, I began doing sheets of color and texture that were intended to be cut and used on later pieces, such as Mysteries of the Obelisk, from 1982.
