Story
In December of 1975 a teacher at Mount Mercy College
asked me to do an illustration for the cover of the Mid Winter Concert.
The music being performed included Nota by Jan Bark, a very non-traditional
piece using sheet music that didn't have traditional notes. It had lines
and squiggles, arrows, and other shapes to indicate types and loudness
of sounds and body movements. Using the sheet music as a basis for shapes,
I created Composition. The teacher enthusiastically said I had captured
the feeling of the music and that his Choir could actually perform my
painting. The students in the performance took up a collection to buy
the work for their teacher.
