Story

Working from sketches made in the margins of yellow legal pads has provided a built-in structure that informs many of my compositions. Think of all of the horizontal blue green lines and the red vertical lines that form the left-hand margin. Mannequin is a good example of how these lines were used to loosely define spaces. Note the jagged edge at the top suggesting how the original sketch was torn from the pad. While the left and top are relatively straight and perpendicular, the right and bottom edges are somewhat irregular reflecting how the corner of the page was quickly cut during a busy workday to save the sketch and keep the notes in a separate place. While completely unplanned, the irregular cuts were carefully duplicated to retain a subtle feel of spontaneity.
