Sketches and StoryOne of my favorite artists is Paul Klee. One of my wife's favorite famous people is Martha Stewart. One day I wondered what would happen if Paul Klee had a "conversation" in watercolor with Martha Stewart. I started by combining two of my sketches into one composition that offered opportunities for playful use of color. I decided to search Martha's magazines for ideas on color -- a color from a wall in one photo, a painted cabinet from another, etc. Before I was too far along, I went grocery shopping. The fresh asparagus captured my attention. The gradation from green to purple was fantastic. I'd never noticed it before. After buying and bringing the asparagus home I used it as color reference before my wife prepared it. The resulting painting: When Paul Met Martha. |
