Stage Fright Woodstock, acrylic on canvas, 1977, approx. 37.5" X 84" To Stage Fright watercolor on paper with silkscreen grid StoryIn the late 70's I was teaching painting and drawing at Mount Mercy College. I would often arrange my teaching schedule so I could teach late mornings and afternoons or afternoons and evenings, stay up until one or two in the morning painting, and get up late in the morning. One of my favorite albums of the time was a Joni Mitchell with her version of her song "Woodstock". Between this song and the movie, I thought of the rock concert Woodstock -- the tiny stage surrounded by a sea of people. I also thought about the line from the song "the bombers turned into butterflies above our nation." These thoughts led to this abstract interpretation of a tiny stage surrounded by color gradations within an overall wing-like shape -- Woodstock.
